Troubleshooting ActiveSync on an Android or iPhone can be a daunting task, since very little information is provided when there is a failure. However, with the Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer and accessmyLAN’s ActiveSync Tester you can not only see exactly what is taking place behind the scenes but also have direct access to knowledgebase articles specific to errors generated in the testing phase.

The first tool, Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer, is an easy to use website hosted by Microsoft. Here, you can test ActiveSync as well as other Exchange features, such as Out of Office and RPC over HTTP and SMTP connectivity. There is also an Office 365 tab, but, as of writing this article, I have yet to test it.

The interface is very simple and will guide you through inputting the appropriate information. Once the test is complete, you will be provided with an easy to read report that shows everything that happened during the test and where the connection failed. A link to a knowledgebase article may also be provided for specific errors.

The second tool is a downloadable application that requires no installation. accessmyLAN’s ActiveSync Tester is available for PC and iPhone. Again, it provides a very simple and elegant interface for testing ActiveSync along with a similar report and diagnostic information with links to knowledgebase articles. While this tool does not provide all the features of Microsoft’s tool, some may find the knowledgebase articles easier to read and follow.
