Working for one of the leading IT management companies in Cincinnati, I am asked a lot about tablet computing. Personally, I have been using an iPad since its release in April 2010 and just recently purchased the iPad 2.
There are so many options and so many apps that can make day-to-day mobile office life easier. Quickoffice Pro is one of those apps. Do you need to open and edit an email from Outlook? No problem!
I downloaded CamScanner about a month ago after it popped up on my list of apps in the android market. The app has become very handy on a weekly, if not daily, basis.
It allows me to take a picture of any document and turn the picture into a PDF document. Any time I come across an article in a magazine, I can turn those pages into PDFs and email them to myself so I can reference them later.
I recommend CamScanner for anyone who would like to reference documents, articles, etc. after reading them. It’s simple to use and very convenient.

A few months ago, when Netflix raised their prices again, I started looking at different options. I decided to move to Redbox as my source for renting Blu-ray movies. Redbox has been great so far. I have never had any problems renting a movie that I wanted to see. The price is right ($1.50/night), and the numerous locations of Redbox’s in my neighborhood makes it very easy.
The one thing that I hated about Redbox was waiting in line for people to figure out what movie they wanted to rent. When I started talking to others about my frustration, they looked at me like I was crazy. After further discussion, I found they weren’t aware that you can actually reserve movies online.
Personally, I haven’t reserved any movies via Redbox’s website, however, I do have the Redbox app on my iPhone and use it all the time. The app is very simple. When you bring it up, it gives you a list of movies by release date, and you can filter them depending on what you are looking to rent.

Windows 7 is more than just a new operating system, it’s an entertainment system. All versions of Windows 7 include a program called Windows Media Center. This program is a one-stop location for all your media needs.
You can watch movies, listen to music, and even make the computer your own personal DVR. If you install a TV card like the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 (Dual Tuner) into your computer, you can pull in TV from cable or an antenna. Windows Media Center will even record your favorite shows.
The default internet browser on my Android phone worked properly, so I rarely give it much thought. I never had any issues getting to an internet page and finding results – so if it isn’t broken, why fix it, right?
But I kept reading about alternative internet browsers, and I wondered if they offered features that I might find useful. So last week, I installed Dolphin on my Android phone and took it for a spin.
My first impression of the browser was that it was aesthetically pleasing. Dolphin maximizes the area of the screen dedicated to internet content and minimizes the area of the screen dedicated to menus and settings by putting them on a Sidebar. If you want to access the SideBar, simply swipe right or left (depending on whether you are interested in accessing the SideBar or the ToolBar). Dolphin also has tabbed browsing, which allows you to have multiple websites open at the same time and even adjusts the text size to best fit your screen.

Since I recently moved to the Chicago area, I still rely heavily on my GPS. My family currently owns only one, which I purchased about three years ago. My wife has recently begun working again, and we find ourselves calling dibs on who gets the GPS that day. Not impressed with the built-in maps for the iPhone, I thought what most people thought, “There’s an app for that.” After some research, I came across an app called Waze.

When searching for the right protective case for my Samsung Galaxy S II Android mobile device, I found that the Ballistic case was the better choice than the Otter Box. It is much lighter and thinner, (not bulky like the Otter Box) and has three layers of protection.
What convinced me was when the Sprint representative took his phone out of his pocket and bounced it back into his hand off the tile floor in the store. I was sold.
With the immense costs of these mobile devices, it is a great idea to not go outside naked!
Eyefinity is a fairly new technology developed by ATI, now owned by AMD. This technology allows you to run multiple monitors as one large resolution or several monitors running independent resolutions. It is viable for consumer and business use but is used to meet very specific needs due to its price.
For business use, this is a great solution for CAD users that need lots of desktop space to span large drawings across multiple screens. Instead of running a 1920x1080 solution, you can run 3840x1080 for two monitors or 5760x1080 for three monitors. The most common configuration is three monitors wide, but you can configure them high as well. This technology is also very flexible because you can run a five-monitor-wide solution with the monitors in a vertical position, giving you more height to work with.
You have a newborn. The nurses and doctors at the hospital are continually asking you questions about how often the baby eats, sleeps, pees, poops and just about anything. You begin writing this all down on a piece of paper, which you lose, or you forget to log everything. When the one week checkup comes, you basically utter something of a tired nature, “I think she pees five times a day, maybe?”
This gets you the shameful look from the nurse as if you are abandoning your child’s needs.
Rest assured, there’s an app for that.
An application called Baby Connect for your smartphone allows you to log a diaper, including what is in the diaper, such as size, color and texture, in a few short taps. A little too much for you, you might think, but it becomes a habit.
“The Cloud” is becoming a buzzword in the technology industry, but it is still a very real and useful item to describe the myriad of online storage services popping up. I have used several cloud-based storage systems and found that they are extremely useful.
I use Carbonite backup to make sure my personal photos and documents are safe from accidental deletion, corruption and disaster. The service is low cost and very manageable. I pay $59 per year for an unlimited amount of storage space, and the system automatically backs up all of my documents.
Picasa Web Albums by Google stores my family photos online for free. It allows me to share my memories with friends and family and will automatically synchronize them to my Android mobile phone for a seamless experience. They provide one gigabyte of storage space.
